Why Identification Matters
Rats and mice look similar at a glance, but they behave differently, nest in different places, and respond to different control methods. Treating a roof rat problem like a mouse problem wastes time and money. These are the practical differences Puyallup homeowners can check without ever seeing the animal.
Size and Appearance
House mice are small: 2 to 4 inches of body plus a thin, hairless tail of similar length, with large ears and a pointed snout. Norway rats are much bigger, 7 to 9 inches of body with a thick, scaly tail, small ears, and a blunt snout. Roof rats fall in between, slender with very long tails. If the animal you glimpsed was clearly larger than a mouse, think rat.
Droppings Tell the Story
Droppings are the most reliable clue. Mouse droppings are about 1/8 inch, pointed at both ends, like tiny grains of rice. Rat droppings are 1/2 to 3/4 inch, blunt-ended, and thicker. Finding large droppings means you are dealing with rats, which need a different approach than mice.
Sounds and Timing
Both are nocturnal, but mice tend to make light scratching and squeaking in walls and cabinets, while rats make heavier scurrying and gnawing sounds, often in attics or crawlspaces. Loud, heavy movement overhead at night is more consistent with rats.
Nesting and Feeding Habits
Mice nest close to food sources, inside kitchens, pantries, and wall voids near them, and they nibble a little from many places. Rats are warier, travel along the same routes nightly, and prefer attics, crawlspaces, garages, and burrows outside. Shredded nests deep inside the kitchen point to mice; nests in the attic or burrow holes along the foundation point to rats.
What To Do Once You Know
Mice can often be handled with careful trapping and sealing of small gaps, while rats usually need a more thorough plan: exterior inspection, burrow treatment, and heavy-duty exclusion. If you are unsure, a professional inspection settles it fast. Call Puyallup Rodent Pros and we will identify the species and build the right plan for it.
