There Is No Official 5 Day Mouse Rule
Search pest control regulations and you will not find a law or official guideline called the 5 day mouse rule. It is a do-it-yourself rule of thumb that trappers use: if a snap trap has not caught a mouse in about five days, move it somewhere else. The logic is simple and backed by how mice behave. Mice travel along walls and follow the same routes night after night. A trap sitting empty for days is almost certainly not on a route the mice are using.
Why Moving the Trap Works
Mice are curious but habitual. They explore new objects quickly, so a well-placed trap usually catches something within a few nights if mice are actually passing through. After five days of nothing, the location is the problem, not the trap. Move it to another spot where you have seen droppings, gnaw marks, or rub marks along baseboards. Place snap traps perpendicular to the wall with the trigger end facing the baseboard, since mice run along the wall edge.
Set Enough Traps in the Right Spots
One or two traps rarely solve a mouse problem. Mice breed fast, so set several traps where the signs are: behind appliances, inside lower cabinets, along garage walls, and near suspected entry points. Rats are the opposite of mice: they fear new objects and may avoid a trap for a week or more. For rats, bait the trap without setting it for a few days so they learn it is safe, then set it once the bait is being eaten. The CDC recommends traditional snap traps over glue traps and live traps, and keeping all traps out of reach of children and pets.
Check Traps Daily and Keep Going
Check every trap at least once a day. A mouse left in a trap becomes a sanitation problem, and a sprung-but-empty trap needs resetting. Keep trapping until there are no new captures and no fresh signs. As a general benchmark, the CDC notes that if no rodents are captured for a week and there are no new droppings, urine spots, or gnawing, the immediate problem is likely resolved. But trapping alone never finishes the job: seal the entry points or new mice will follow the same routes in. If you are catching mice faster than you can relocate traps, call Puyallup Rodent Pros for inspection and removal.
